Fire Island watercolor © 2006 On Fire Island there are no cars; boardwalks connect the bay to the sea with houses in between. People travel on foot, sometimes pulling red wagons, and on bicycles with varying degrees of rust from the sea air. By mid september the island becomes blissfully quiet. As the island is narrow, the walk to the beach is short, tunneled with lush green.
