Underpainting for Landscape

detail of underpainting for Rosewood 40 x 30" acrylic on canvas © Maud Guilfoyle

Whether I am painting plein air or from a conceptual image, I lay in areas of light and shadow with larger brushes, using smaller flats, filberts and rounds for the final detail. If I lose sight of 'the bigger picture' (no pun intended) I risk getting tied up in details that should come later.
