Artists' courage to make bad art

Rose of Sharon, watercolor, 4 x 8" © Maud Guilfoyle

When I went to see the Matisse - In Search of True Painting exhibit, my friend commented that she didn't think all the work shown was equally brilliant. I said it takes courage to keep making art knowing that not every work will be successful. It is a gift to see a life span of work, including nascent works as well as masterpieces. It also takes courage for an artist to change style or subject matter when they are successful and have a large following.
